| Yep, Tuner is recording again ~ and what a recording it is! Might take another year to complete. But in the meantime have also been working on a wonderful, and somewhat Totem like Markus Reuter/Ian Boddy CD and several live Tuner recordings, so, fingers crossed, later this year... "Tuner Live in Estonia". |
|

Miss you Ian.
Thanks for the eclipse.
To infinity and beyond~!
Our next Tuner record managed to go past Pro Tools current capabilities. . . besides crashes my screen even went into epileptic seizures (reminding me of a Rembrandt B-side I did called 'She's fixing to blow'). . but after 27 hours finding workarounds and reorganizing we are back to making music again. Yippeee!
Here is a little better photographic clue of the project:

Recording the next Tuner record(s). . .
What's this picture mean ? I'll give a big smile and a thumbs up to anyone that can figure that out~ Good luck!

Day of yard work, joy and wonder.
Aloke has survived his surgery!
Markus arrives tonight so we can begin our next Tuner recording.

Just finished mixes for MPTU CD, sounds really good but will be even better after it mastered and shrink wraped for christmas.
Heading of to meet Markus in Estonia to do our first Tuner shows in over a year. We will open for new Toyah Wilcox and Bill Reflin project called 'the Humans".
heee haw- i got a feature here (something i did wirth my good pal Marco during summer NAMM) over at Vic's site.
www.vicfirth.com/artists/mastelotto.html
We just did more KTU tracking last week and i have posted a few videos of the sessions over at my Myspace. I plan to be posting more videos over at Myspace, so please leave me a comment if and what you might like to see.
T Lev sent over a copy of his new Stick Man cd and that sucker rocks! Looks like we will be doing a part two early next year.
In Poland with Trey Gunn for International Percussion Festival with Peter Erskin, Kenny Aronoff, Carmine Appice, Tony Royster, Mike Terrana, Rudd Wiener, Krzak, and many other amazing drummers (how do i get so lucky?!).
Brand new MPTU songs and mixes at

and a new TU VIDEO at :

Virgo's delight.
A spring date has been set for the King to gently rev up.
Preparing some interesting patches for upcoming TU gigs (Seattle next week and Poland the first week of October). Trey and I will use these Tu rehearsals and shows to test some new ideas for KTU. KTU will be recording again second week of October when Kimmo comes to America.
Tuner will have its first live shows in over a year this October in Estonia, we will open for a Toyah Wilcox and Bill Rieflin project and have been asked to prepare something we can all play together. Oh Boy!
Then I jump over to Sweden to guest on a November Euro tour with the Flower Kings (man-o-man they have some long songs! up early and working on them now).
New release from Tony Levin, called 'Stickman', is just coming out to a warm reception, so warm that plans have started for a sequel . . 'Stickmen' . . this should come together early next year.
I have been busy with a new little project I've had in the works for the past few months, that you can taste here:
www.myspace.com/mptumusic
Modern Drummer magazine's new issue on 'Prog' has a blurp about my woodshed/workshop and has additional studio story here :
www.moderndrummer.com/updatefull/200001609
In this issue they also list their Top 50 all time prog recordings. . .and i was stunned to see they have the new Tuner CD 'Pole' on the list- fuck me! right up there with the real classics. High Five's to Markus and Fabio, and all our talented guest stars.

Literally too busy to keep up, and in many ways myspace has taken the lead as the web site news location, . . But last week we had a scare when the host of this site was hacked and we lost all data, that was a wake up call to remnind me how much information is here - guest book Q+A, all those tour fotos, the musical downloads, text, etc - Luckily a backup was found and this site is back (duh, obviously since your reading this here).
So what's new:
KTU gigs in Spain and Slovakia went great and you can read about it over at Trey's site. I came back and went right to Oklahoma for gigs with a newer project MPTU , then work on eSession recordings , and another Simone song with Markus (This one is a cover of classic and we first cut in June at around 125bpm, the new recut was started at 86bpm so it a real make over . . however along the way Markus discovered a relative tempo of 96.75 if put in 9/8. Wow pretty wild results and i look forward to hearing how its finaly mixed (BTW David Botrill will be handling the mix for Simone's record!) , and started MPTU recording (you can follow our work in progress over at the link). Had a good time at NAMM and got to hang with my pals from Vic Firth and Paiste and players like Bozzio ans Scot from RHH. Next month Trey and I will gig in Seattle along with Adrian Belew so that should be fun, also in Sept new Tony Levin CD Stick Man comes out, I did a lot of drumming for this during the last Christmas hollidays and think Tony is very happy with the results, and I love what I've seen of the artwork.
A found farewell to Tony Wilson. Just a few weeks ago, while traveling up the Andalusia mountains with KTU, i watched 24 hr Party People and was enjoying Tony's work.
Aug 10th
CGT is in town and should be out to my place to record a bit next week.
Big news is . . .Crim's Road Dog, Enginer , Bill Munyon "s getting married! We will be having the wedding here at my home next weekend.
So today besides house work and yard work i have to get fotos to renew my passport (looks like Poland in early October, then back to record KTU, then Estonia with Tuner, then back home for a few days before Italy in early November with MFB (another new project with Phil Brown and Lorenzo Feliciati).

New Tuner CD "POLE" is out ... and it is very good!
Also on new releases by Abra Moore's "On the way" and David Grissom's "Loud Music", both a little different for me. . 'brush work and Americana'.
Preparing for KTU gigs in Europe next week, KTU will continue to break in new material in preparation for recording this fall.
Last weekend I did a show with the CGT at the Quebec Summer Fest and that was a lot of fun. a few pictures here:
picasaweb.google.ca/pichugues/CGTQUEBEC070807

Show with Will Taylor tomorrow, then Abra Moore the follwing night. A few days ago i drummed on a new single for Patty Griffin.

A day to remember.

Last minute gig with John Pointer tonight at Cedar Street in Austin, two drummers so this should be a lot of fun.
Start work on a track for CGT tomorrow.
Markus will be coming over next week with Simone. We will spend a week or two building tracks for her record that Markus is producing. He also gave me news on the delay in our Tuner release (our spiffy art work has caused a few malfunctions at the pressing plant. . .but maybe it was fate. . 11 11. . .11 11. . . 11 11. . .
<<Just got a notice that copies will ship to the distributor next Monday, 11th

Played with Pine Top Perkins last night. . He is about 93 years old and still pumping the blues like a boogie woogie Jelly Roll. Pine Top was the piano man with Muddy Waters , Sonny Boy Williamson and other blues legends.

Got a call to fill in for a Will Taylor strings attached Zeppelin tribute gig at Thredagills this saturday- Oh Boy I get to try and learn 20 Zep tunes in two days.

Congratulations to Markus and Renee , may they live happily ever after.
Wrapping up tracks for P.J. Olsson.
P.J. has an interesting record deal, he is one of the new artist signed by CBS. They will place these new artists songs on CBS TV shows and as digital downloads and if any thing takes off they might press CDs.
Did a couple TU shows with TOOL last week, you can see pics and read about it here:

Back from KTU warm up gigs in Finland. . .warm? . . WTF!?! it was 20 below. check the KTU myspace page for new photos. . .some taken outside by the sea bbbbrrrrrrr. We also did a few days song writing and added 5 new 'works in progress' to the shows in Finland. KTU, as a trio, will hit North America for a few shows in March. The first 3 shows will be part of a four Finlandish band Musex package that KTU will headline.

Happy newest year.
Stayed busy throughout the holidays building tracks for a Tony Levin solo record, drumming with Phil Brown, cooking, cleaning and being Santa dad.
Markus is coming over in a couple weeks and we will finalize the details of our new Tuner record. BTW would you like to drum on a Tuner tune ? The crazy idea is: before we actually release our new record we post a drum less track for interested folks to add drums too, whatchathink? more info soon.

1975 - No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: "Fly, Robin, Fly," Silver Convention. Producer Michael Kunze originally calls the song "Run, Rabbit, Run."
1965 - No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: "Turn! Turn! Turn!" The Byrds. Songwriter Pete Seeger adapted the lyrics from the Book of Ecclesiastes.

jeeze its December already?
been very busy:
starting work with a wonderful guitarist Phil Brown , more E sessions for Gina Fant-Saez, did another record for Abra Moore a few weeks ago, did a gig with the Trey Gunn / Joe Mendelson Quodia project (no rehearsal but it took me a week to write cues and build a drum kit to play em. . .wish i had a foto), in mid November we had a Percussive Arts Society week here in Austin and saw old pals and got a major drum injection .. . yesterday I was a judge for the Paul Green school of rock battle of the Kid band and tomorrow I am involved in an E session panel discussion,
i started work on the the Metamorphous trio and Tuner sessions we did in Sweden. . . .but still need to get the Tunisia stuff mixed and hope to do that later this week or next . Had a couple good days working in the garden (but then the Deer came and ate most of my labors). made Thanksgiving day chow for a house full of friendly human guests.
Had Trey Gunn here in my studio for a couple days of song writing for KTU.. . looking like KTU will do a few gigs in North America this coming March, but as a trio (because Samuli has other gigs booked with MUM) so i have been preparing to cover his parts, KTU just booked a few Finlandish gigs in January to test the KTU trio water.
lots and lots to do. . . so it seems i'm always walking around a bit sleepy. . . . but in reality I must confess most my time has actualy been spent watching this damm video clip over and over (ahhh the days when men were men, in suits, and drums were drums) www.glumbert.com/media/drums

Halmstad , Sweden.
Having a great time working with the largest ensemble i can recall. . .there are 12 of us. . .sometimes all on stage together!!
We are Thraking and Vrooming and Ba Booming and Absinthing and much much more!
The drumming is led by Kjell Severinsson on trap kit and Klas Assarsson on orchestral percussion ala Jamie Muir.
In the past few days we have prepared lots of material but of course the random improvisation is what I am most looking forward too. As we learned each other material this week i found the Italians , The Metamorfosi Trio, only improvise. . .this is not exactly accurate since they are amazing sight readers and are playing some ridiculous charts put in front of them. Check here for more info and following the links to the blogs of Thomas for fotos.

Home!
Kind of strange to be home for more than a week. The KTU gigs in Spain and Portugal were fantastic and I really enjoyed taking a few extra days to soak in both cultures, met some wonderful students and saw lots of great art and music, even met one of my favorite bands "The Bad Plus" and then spent an hour standing with David King and Tony Alan watching Trilok Gurtu.
Leaving for France next week to do more Cock Robin gigs (festivals) and then to Germany to meet Markus and Fabio Trentini and begin mixing the next Tuner record.
Last week I went to Portland and at the airport ran into The Tubes with ex Cock Robin drummer Lou Molino chasing his lost luggage (small world!).
While home I have been preparing Tuner vocal tracks and got even more vocal contributions from Peter Kingsbery when he dropped into Texas last week. Sadly i also found a hard drive has died. . .big drag since it contains lots of valuable data including the Crimson 04 rehearsals that BPMM had been tweaking (tomorrow I meet a friend who might be able to revive the drive).
Trey Gunn and I play on the new release from Azam Ali, check it out- she is fantastic.
In October i will spend a week in Sweden working with Markus Reuter and Isildurs Bane .

**Last spring after the KTU show in Denmark a genuinely excited David Fricke (legendary Rolling stone writer) came to met the band. I read now that he has posted:
David Fricke's column "Fricke's Picks" in the current issue of Rolling Stone:
KTU (pronounced "K2") are a quartet of devilishly intergrated halves: avant-accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen and digital manipulator Samuli Kosminen from Finland, and drummer Pat Mastelotto and guitarist Trey Gunn from King Crimson. Their debut, Eight Armed Monkey (Thirsty Ear), recorded live in 2004, is a robust tumult of Northern Lights sparkle, white-wolf guitar wail and rolling, knotted thunder. Pohjonen is a wonder unto himself: animating his wind song with pedals and processing; attacking the bellows with the ecstatic fury of Jimi Hendrix. When I saw KTU play in Europe recently, they were as powerful and transgressive as the current killer Crimson (without, of course, Robert Fripp). But I was stunned to discover, after the show, that KTU have yet to get an American gig because, Gunn said, "Promoters are afraid of the word 'accordion.' " People, look at it this way: Pohjonen plays the ultimate in air guitar. Now hit the phone.

Wonderfull weekend.
NAMM show in Austin. Ran into many old pals includeing Joe Montineri, Adam and the M Audio gang, Eddie and the Paistes, Terry Bozzio, Donny Wynn, JJ Johnson . . .and also met several inspiration newies like Pat Foley, Geoff Emerick, and Rupert Neve. Just back from Russia -spending almost two weeks, sharing apartments with Russians and traveling deeper into the north I got to experience a very different side of Russia, I plan to write a more detailed blog over at the myspace site but in the meantime check this link for pictures and a story from my (not a master) drum class - once again the russian to English computer translation give some very funny interpretations.
While home the next few weeks I am working on tracks for one of Austin's more eclectic and outside young musicians John Pointercheck out John's 'make a CD with me' offer. Also doing more sonic work for the new Microsoft Vista OS, and even starting some Cock Robin rehearsals here in Austin later this week.
My next live show coming up will be the KTU North American debut May, 19 2006 at FIMAV Festival near Victoriaville, Quebec, Canada .
Followed by a May 27th warm up date for Cock Robin at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano California (more CR gigs start mid June in Europe).

Pamelia Kurstin was in town for SXSW and once again I snatched her from the Barbez bus for another all-nighter recording more for our Tunisia project. In another strange case of synchronicity "A Night In Tunisia" was playing at the club we were at so we recorded a version of that: SXSW Night in Tunisia. Drums by Art Blakey RIP.

More work with "The Trail of the Dead" , another epic tune from Conrad and the gang. For this tune Producer Mike McCarthy, assisted by Munyon, had me on another strange bastard kit... Not unlike the kit I was just recording with at home for ZeeGrass... except ZeeGrass is gentle rockabilly brushing while Trail is slamming like Questlove meets Bonham.
It also seems like all roads lead to Russia these days. Trail is heading there in couple weeks, followed by Zee, followed by Tuner (with special guest SiRenée). I'll certainly be doing the Tuner dates and possibly some ZeeGrass dates but can only lend moral support for the Trailers.

Tuner workshop/gig in North Austin at ACC Northridge campus in room 4136 (the lecture hall) in the 4000 building of the Northridge campus. The campus is located on Stonehollow and Metric Blvd., just about a half mile north of the intersection of Braker and Metric, a major intersection.
Weds Feb 8th at 7pm

Been whizzing along pretty fast here in the new year.
Back tracking, after coming home from recording with (every drummers dream) Tony Levin I had the privilege of being joined in my home studio by the worlds most phenonmenal rollerskating brid-punching thereminist Pamelia Kurstin . Last year I met Pamelia in NYC while touring with the CGT and then months later I grabbed Pamilia off an Austin bandstand, when she came through town touring with Barbez, and we started my newest duo (tuo?), Tunisia. Yes I literally took her from the stage to my home after her gig and we recorded from about 3am till about 10 am when i returned her to the Barbez bus for there departure to the next gig, after that she moved to Europe and has recently come back to America for a few weeks. If you have not heard Barbez I can highly recommend them. Pamilia's 'sleep over session' was a good start but this past week we had 5 days together and got 6 more songs flushed out... We hope the Tunisia CD will be done by summer.
Here is a taste of our first collaboration, our untitled late night after show ditty.
A few days after Pamelia left Markus arrived for the second round of work for the next Tuner CD. Besides arriving with a suitcase (if you have been reading my site you might remember the Airlines have lost his luggage on every trip) Markus brought back incredible vocals he cut in Austria with Sirenee - its such a pleasure to edit, arrange and compose around her voice.
This Saturday Markus and I will join Laura Scarborough for a gentle gig at Café Mundi in Austin and then next weds Markus and I will do a master class at Austin Community College (don't tell the students but I’m a little nervous about doing music in an academic setting).
Also with help from Markus I launched a KTU myspace page where we hope to soon begin posting KTU videos. Check KTU here:

Just a quick note to let you know that there's a free download of an audience recording of an improvised Reuter/Kuljuntausta/Mastelotto show (Helsinki, Finland, April 2004) available at www.projekction.net
This collaboration eventually led to the TUNER project that Markus and I launched in March 2005.
I spent last week-end at Saint-Claire Recorders, a stunning studio in Kentucky recording Ronan Chris Murphy record with Tony Levin and Mike Keneally.

Happy Newest Year!
Good news/bad news
Our new TUNER morsel (that we have since titled 'White Cake Sky") had well over 500 downloads in 10 days.
Bad news: We have taken the download down.
Good news: We have launched a TUNER site at Myspace.com and reposted the mp3, and others (incl. a free download of the full 'flinch' track from our debut album TOTEM). Go to http://www.myspace.com/tunertunes. Login and become a friend. We'll make exclusive previews and out-takes of TUNER music available there regularly.
U.T., in Austin, won the big football game. Our humble town has gone nutty (not sure if thats good or bad news).
RCM IN KY
No, no, no the state not the gel. Later this week I go to what looks like the most amazing studio (http://www.saint-claire.com/) to record a Ronan Chris Murphy solo record. The tracking band will be RCM, me, Tony Levin and Mike Keneally and as if that's not enough the RCM band has one more member who will be absent from tracking but overdub his parts the following week... drum roll... double drum roll... Terry Bozzio! RCM has a rather unusual request in that I play drums and Terry plays cymbals.
Other hot new news
KTU has been invited to the Victoriaville festival near Montreal this coming May and are booking a few more select dates in North America to coincide with that brief window when all our schedules coincide.

Happy Holidays!
Been much too busy to type so a little catch up is in order.
For starters check this link: Story of KTU gig
I became aware of this blog a few days ago. It is an online diary (with pics) from BIG, one of the stage hands in Moscow telling his story of the KTU gig. The Russian to English translation is a hoot . One pal commented it sounds like I was making a porn movie as he read about my 'hot rod shooting fire'.
Going backwards:
Nov 29 Markus arrived (but his luggage did not) and we quickly began recording the following day. First we converted my newly acquired Baby Grand Piano (it is so wonderful to have a piano in the house, thank you Ed and Ilane) into a prepared Piano with small cyms and gongs, clips and papers, etc. and attacked it with mallets, brushes, sticks, kitchen cutlery and even some small old european irons. We recorded aprox 1 hr of this mayham and also some improvised duets (I play low end ostinatos that Markus adds chordal accompaniment to). Then we chopped these performances into a folder of raw footage to extract samples from. I'll get more info and pics about the recording of this new TUNER music soon as we announce the new TUNER page on MySpace.com (mmm should that be our space?).
The next day Dec 1st we did the first Black Tent gig at Pink. Despite the sound man (me) forgetting the mixing desk, the gig went fantastic. The audience grew larger every show and the musicians came and went... and played freely. I have a recording but have yet to have a moment to stop and review it. Some highlights (from comments I overheard): Surround sound with Markus in the back stereo and me in the front, Gumby with strapped on battery powered pignose amp walking through the audience playing electric guitar, melodica duos in the back of the room, Monkey saxing around in the dark, Roberto playing violin from the four corners, Laura's abstract vibraphone and Gamelan playing. Me dropping a pile of cyms at someone's feet and scare the poop out of them... My throwing a doggie squeeze toy across the room as the squeal exhaled, and . . .a Santa's drum circle that appeared.
The next day Markus and I resumed recording. The usual modus operandi (M.O.) was extracting prepared piano chunks, and building a bed - for instance on song#1: 3 bars of 7/4 and a bar of 6/4 that go together well and looping that 27 beat pattern 4 times as a 'verse' and then jumping to a loop of 3 x 4/4 and a 5/4 tag. Then jamming over this until we had a few motifs that more clearly defined the piece, blocking out chords with mellotrons or vintage rhodes sounds, then live drums, warr guitars - somewhere along the way the form would start to organicaly evolve and we would continue cutting until our arrangement felt satsifying. Our general hrs of operation were noon till 3 am but somedays we started even earlier - we both got rather exhausted but the music was too inticing to stop. By song 4 we were ready for a change in M.O. so we resorted to the several acoustic guitars I acquired for Markus to employ (again thank you to Ed Reynolds for the classical and 6 string, and Gina for the 12 string) while i played cajon or log drums. After a few days of that I woke Markus to the sound of drummer drumming, throwing down some beat ideas I have harboured for a few years and applying them to plug-ins like Reso and Bruno (sort of like vocoders that allow the drums to act a trigger source while the notes and chords are input to the Reso). Markus had no shortage of chord progressions as he continues to use a serial type algorithm to generate starting harmonic structures...
Markus was planning to leave Sunday the 11th, but rebooked for the 14th to give us more time - a few hrs after i dropped him at the airport a text arrived 'can you come pick me up?' - yep he was stranded at the Austin airport for 4 hrs because of bad weather in Chicago. Rebooked for Friday 16, yesterday, the flights once again ran later and later. He was eventualy able to finally leave yesterday but got stuck in DC for 5 hrs and then in Frankfurt for 9 hrs more, arriving home several hours later (once again without his luggage). The upside to his staying was we got to continue doing more TUNER tracking -we have 8 pieces about 80% done, and several more slabs in progress- and also that Markus could work with me on a few tracks for Laura Scarborough and then Heather Sullivan. Heather is a singer/songwriter that I had booked to arrive for collaboration on Tuesday after Markus was originally planning to depart. The end result was fantastic as it allowed Markus and I to wear our 'Kruder and Dorfmeister hats' and prepare funky Europe jazz chill room elevator music for Heather. We had been censoring any programmed or beat box use for the new TUNER recording but all those rules went out the window for Heather's tracks - we even faded one song! That's right! Have you ever noticed that basic rule of projects that involve 'Pat Productions'? NO FADES
My thinking is if you have to fade it means you couldn't think of an ending, but if you played live you would have to find an ending, so might as well find it sooner than later.

Some quotes from an Interview with Jay Terrien: (You can find the full interview here: bassplayers.co.za/interviewjay-t2.html)
"My favorite moment comes at about 2:25m where you can hear Pat whirling and whipping around some percussion device of death, which he obviously purchased in Amsterdam."
"WEDREN: This song gave Ronan and me nightmares. We would start working on this tune in the late afternoon and even with a large iced coffee in us, the change of tonality, texture, and mood of this piece just put us to sleep. We spent a lot of time trying to figure out why this piece drove us nuts, which of course, turned out to be all Pat's fault. He created some eerie Taos drum loops that operated on such a low-bass level drone that the tune just sapped our energies!"
"R.C.M rules!"
"But here's the thing, I am a HUGE X.T.C. fan, and remembering that Pat Mastelotto tore it up on "Oranges And Lemons" and also that he is one of Ronan's favorite go-to guys, I simply trusted Ronan's decision that Pat was THE GUY. Ronan said it best over dinner one night: "King Crimson and X.T.C. are a hard combination to beat!"
